Presentation and history of MMA

What is MMA? MMA as a combat sport is a discipline where two people (men / women) compete in a ring called an octagon. Fighters are free to use all types of effective and authorized techniques to overcome their opponents. Thus by using several techniques, complete discipline, MMA borrows many of its techniques from traditional martial arts (wrestling, boxing, judo, Thai boxing, etc.) Practitioners can use standing and submission melee techniques , projections and percussion techniques standing or on the ground. If it is known that it is a sport that is not very artistic, its effectiveness is no longer to be proven and this is the reason why it is qualified as the ultimate sport.

We find traces of free fights in ancient Greece with Pancrace, a very popular and violent Olympic discipline. All over the world, there were traces of free fighting competitions and the beginnings of MMA are becoming clearer in Brazil. Indeed, the history of MMA is closely linked to the Brazilian Vale Tudo and the Gracie family. This family largely contributed to the development of mixed fights with the “Challenge Gracie” where fighters from several disciplines competed. Subsequently, Gracie Jiu-jitsu or Brazilian jiu-jitsu is exported all over the world and in particular to the United States.

Birth of MMA

The MMA phenomenon was born with the
establishment of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). The first
global MMA competition in the 1990s, the UFC laid the foundations for other
MMA competitions and for the professionalization of mixed fights.
Today, MMA as the ultimate sport
is far from what it was at the beginning, there are now rules,
specific equipment, weight categories, different fighting styles,
etc.

General rules
applicable in an MMA fight

The fight MMA rules differ from one country to another or one
organization to another. However, there are general rules
concerning in particular the duration of the fights, the prohibitions, the preliminaries
before each fight or the weight categories. In general, an ultimate sport MMA fight lasts
3 rounds with the possibility of going to 5 rounds if the fight involves
a belt. Each round lasts 3 to 5 minutes and a
recovery time (one minute) is respected between each round.

Certain restrictions must be observed, in particular the prohibition of:

  • Give head shots;
  • Hit certain places (private parts, throat, neck, joints, spine, kidneys);
  • Put the fingers in the nose, eyes, mouth, ears;
  • The projections outside the octagon;
  • Spit, scratch, bite or pinch your opponent;
  • Hair pulling;
  • Hit the head of a fighter on the ground with his knee or his foot;
  • To grab onto the shorts or the gloves of his vis-à-vis;
  • Fake an injury or willfully refuse the fight;
  • Getting into the corner of the opponent;
  • Ignore the decision or the referee's instructions, etc.

Before a fight

Before each octagon MMA fight , each fighter must present several
supporting documents to prove that he is fit for combat. Among these supporting documents,
we can cite a medical certificate validating his combat aptitude for
the current season, a fundus examination dating back less than 3 months,
a notebook of all the knockouts suffered or a head scan in case of KO suffered, an
HIV and hepatitis test, an EKG, etc. On the eve of each
fight, the fighters are required to attend the official weigh-in which is
held in the city where the competition is organized.

The official weigh-in consists in
determining the weight of the two fighters. It can happen that one of the two
opponents is heavier than the other and in this case, the fight can be
postponed, canceled or the stakes of the fight can be reduced. If a
belt was in play, the possibility of winning it may be canceled. Before
entering the ring, petroleum jelly is applied to the fighter's face
by a doctor. The purpose of this is to protect it from possible friction
and cuts.

The different weight categories

The rules concerning the
weight categories are also unanimous at each competition. For an MMA octagon fight , there are
9 weight categories namely the category:

  • Flyweight which brings together fighters under 57 kg;
  • Rooster for less than 61 kg;
  • Feather for less than 66 kg;
  • Lightweight, less than 70 kg;
  • Welter, less than 77 kg;
  • Medium, less than 84 kg;
  • Medium-heavy, less than 93 kg;
  • Heavy, less than 120 kg;
  • Super heavy, here no weight limit.

The equipment necessary
for the practice of MMA

Like any sporting activity, the practice of MMA requires specific equipment. The equipment MMA fight includes shorts, gloves, mouth guard, a shell and accessories for training.

Shorts for
MMA fighters

To be an MMA fan in a sport club , all you need is
quality, durable shorts. Here, no shorts are specific to
MMA, you just need to find the one that will offer you the most comfort. You
can thus opt for shorts close to the body, short and / or tight
shorts, long and loose shorts.
